Hue is somewhat of a quiet and reserved town, although there are anumber of decent beaches with activities available not far from thecity, which are easy to get to. Apart from the swimming, relaxing seemsto be the main purpose of visiting most beaches...
Beaches in Hue:
Located to the north of Hue, Thuan An Beach is the most popular of the region and, although the swimming isn’t great, the coastal views and atmosphere are good. Thuan An Beach fills up during weekends and holidays with young locals, so get there early to guarantee a hammock on the beach. The seafood restaurants here are great. Lang Co beach is a long beach located near Hai Van pass and is also well known for its seafood restaurants, while the scenic Chan May and Lang Co fishing villages are another highlight.
Shopping in Hue:
Shopping is best enjoyed along Hue’s main thoroughfare, Le Loi Street. There are numerous souvenir stalls here that sell mostly tourist tack, although some fascinating items can be found if you know what you’re doing. Velvet Ho Chi Minh\'s and commemorative spoons may not be authentic but, among the general rabble, offer the best bang for the buck. Le Loi Street is also home to several quality silversmiths where elaborate jewellery can be bought.Eating and drinking in Hue:
If you hanker for some good local specialities, head for the street-side stalls. The backpacker area along Hung Vuong has several good places that have English menus. Hue is a bit on the sleepy side so don’t expect all night parties and raging bars or you may be disappointed. There are, however, several cafes and bars that offer some sort of nightlife and the DMZ Cafe, opposite the major riverside hotels, offers many beers and is pretty popular. ‘Bar Why Not’ is a breezy, open-air bar with pool table and hot dogs and also popular. In addition there are several bars and cafes along Hung Vuong that stay open until around midnight.
